Big3 Week 1 Recap

Ice Cube’s Big3 basketball league officially tipped off their third season at Little Ceasers Arena in Detroit and in Banker’s Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. In January, the league expanded from eight teams to 12 and will now play three games each on Saturday and Sunday. The weekend was filled with stars and teams making their debut in the Big3, exciting games, an altercation and a wedding proposal. All in all, this was a successful start to the Big3’s third season and could be in for a great season. Let’s recap all the action!

The 3 Headed Monsters got the weekend started with a 51-46 win over over the inaugural Big3 champion Trilogy. Reggie Evans had a dominant performance for the 3 Headed Monsters with 22 points and 23 rebounds while former Big3 MVP Rashard Lewis had 18 points and 11 rebounds in their win. James White led the Trilogy with 17 points and seven rebounds. The biggest story of this game came at halftime when 3 Headed Monsters big man Larry Sanders proposed to his girlfriend and of course, SHE SAID YES! Congratulations to the happy couple!

Next up is the reigning champs Power getting a 50-38 win over 3’s Company. The Power’s star guard Cuttino Mobley was a one-man show in this game with 28 points, six rebounds and four assists. NBA journeyman big man Drew Gooden led the Power with 12 points followed by Dijon Thompson with 10 points and six rebounds. Dermarr Johnson of 3’s Company made the first four-point shot of the season finishing the game with eight points in the game but it was not enough to get the win.

The final game of the first day in the first week was between debuting teams Bivouac and the Enemies. The biggest story from this game was an altercation between Biouvac’s Josh Smith and Enemies’ Royce White in the first half of the game that led to both players being ejected. The Bivouac would regroup en route to a 50-43 win in their debut. Biouvac were led by guard Will Bynum who put on a show with 22 points while sharpshooter Anthony Morrow had 16 points, five rebounds and two steals. The Enemies were led by Craig Smith 26 points and 11 rebounds while Perry Jones had 10 points in the game. Lamar Odom made his Big3 debut with two points and four rebounds.

The second day of week one say the debut of the Triplets and the Aliens with the Triplets taking a 50-40 win. The Triplets were led by former NBA All-Star guard Joe Johnson who was without a doubt the player of the weekend with 27 points, 16 rebounds and four assists in his Big3 debut. Al Jefferson, also making his Big3 debut had 11 points for the Triplets. The Aliens were led by Brandon Rush who had 13 points and seven rebounds while Andre Owens had 11 points, four rebounds and three assists.

The next game was easily the game of the weekend which saw the Killer 3s get a 54-52 win over Tri-State. Josh Powell led the Killer 3s with 18 points and 9 rebounds followed by Donte Greene who had 14 points. Franklin Session had 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists in the game for the Killer 3s. Tri-State star big man Amar’e Stoudemire had 26 points and 10 rebounds in the game while Jason Richardson had 17 points and 10 rebounds in his Big3 debut.

The final game of the first week saw the Ghost Ballers take a 50-39 win over the Ball Hogs. The Ghost Ballers were led by Jamario Moon who had 20 points and seven rebounds while Mike Taylor had 15 points in the game. Ricky Davis had 10 points for the Ghost Ballers on their way to victory. The Ball Hogs were led by Will McDonald with 17 points and 12 rebounds while DeShawn Stevenson and Marcus Williams both had 10 points.
